Error While Building OpenCV on Ubuntu

Quick Summary

  • I am building the OpenCV library from source on Ubuntu

  • I am attempting to build with FFMPEG and GUI support

  • cmake is successful, and the output shows FFMPEG as enabled

  • However, when I make the library, it fails about halfway through with these errors:

      /usr/bin/ld: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/librsvg-2.so.2: undefined reference to `cairo_tag_end'
      /usr/bin/ld: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/librsvg-2.so.2: undefined reference to ` cairo_tag_begin' 
      /usr/bin/ld: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/librsvg-2.so.2: undefined reference to `cairo_font_options_get_variations'
    
  • There’s very limited Google results on this issue at the moment. From what I’ve seen it has to do with Cmake not using the correct version of libcairo or not loading it. I have attempted forcing it to load with LD_PRELOAD without success.

System Details

  • Operating System: Ubuntu 20.10
  • OpenCV Version - Main branch pulled 5/8/2021

Normally I would do make -j15 but based on a similar problem I found here:

I tried using LD_PRELOAD to load in libcairo before the build starts.

  • I’m not actually sure what I should be passing in here so don’t assume I did this correctly
  • I assumed that the libcairo2-dev that I installed with apt was the one I should load in.

When I searched I found three libcairo related packages at paths:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcairo.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcairo-gobject.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcairo-script-interpreter.so

So I made three separate build attempts with:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcairo.so make -j15
LD_PRELOAD=usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcairo-gobject.so make -j15
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcairo-script-interpreter.so make -j15

All of which failed. Again, not even sure if I’m using LD_PRELOAD correctly or if it makes sense for this application.

I can provide the output of my make command if needed but it is very long and I’m not sure that it will be useful.

unfortunately not an opencv error, but qt related, probably the cairo dependancy has the wrong version (is missing symbols)

your LD_PRELOAD attempts don’t change anything,
try to find out, which exact dependancies your qt version needs

I’m interested to what directed you to qt. I had a working build prior to enabling video support so my suspicion had been one of the video-related packages. Either way, pointing me away from LD_PRELOAD was very helpful, checking all my package dependencies now.

After looking into package dependencies more I realize that the info in my last reply probably isn’t that useful. Here’s some of the stuff I’ve tried in the meantime:

  • I did a reverse dependency search on libcairo2. I didn’t find any packages related to qt there though.

  • I looked closely at librsvg2-2 since that’s what’s failing the build. It’s obviously dependent on libcairo2 and libcairo-gobject2. The versions it wants are:

    • libcairo-gobject2 (>= 1.10.0)
    • libcairo2 (>= 1.15.12)

but the versions I have are:

  • libcairo2: Version: 1.16.0-4ubuntu1
  • libcairo-gobject2: Version: 1.16.0-4ubuntu1

So I’m using a version that should work. I looked into installing previous versions of libcairo2 but I don’t have any in my apt cache that I can go back to.

  • To try and see if the GUI or the Video Streaming was causing the issue, I built with -DWITH_FFMPEG=OFF and it was successful. I would guess this means that something on the video streaming side is causing problems.

  • While reading the docs on video streaming, I noticed a note that said:

Make sure a proper version of ffmpeg or gstreamer is installed. Sometimes it is a headache to work with video capture, mostly due to wrong installation of ffmpeg/gstreamer.

While this was for a python tutorial, I wonder if this should be my focus?

I would suggest you to try compile using a Docker image with Ubuntu 18.04.

I had a similar problem this week with dependencies versions. In my case, I compiled OpenCV fine using Ubuntu 20.04 but when compiling alongside my project gave me some linker errors with some libraries versions.

Finally solved it using a Docker image with Debian 9.
